We open the Sundance and Cannes award-winning film Beasts of the Southern Wild that our cinema department described as “magical realism in post-Katrina New Orleans.” Bring your tissues. Also, the pre-show is pretty fantastic, heavy on the music and all about Louisiana.

Also, we’re continuing to show the most popular movie ever (just seems like it with all of our shows selling out) Moonrise Kingdom and To Rome With Love.

Big Bird and the rest of the gang are in The Muppet Vault this Saturday (July 21). This screening will feature classic, rare, and unreleased videos from the Muppets and Sesame Street – basically all things Jim Henson! Hosted by Muppet insiders and experts. This event is for kids of all ages! Related: our staff picks their favorite muppets here.

Speaking of big, watch the luscious Jayne Mansfield and funny-man Tony Randall in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter, filmed larger-than-life in CineScope. This Saturday (July 21) and Sunday (July 22) at noon.

What was once extremely controversial (for a variety of reasons) the Al Pacino vehicle Cruising can now be looked at with the experience of time to see a flawed yet culturally significant film. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see the film this weekend at Nitehawk.

Brooklyn Based writes a great piece, The Show Before the Show, on our cinema director, John Woods, including his interest in films and how he contextualizes our amazing pre-shows.

VHS Vault
Many would argue that Monday’s VHS Vault’s film Demolition Man (1993) starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and Denis Leary isn’t so bad, it’s good but that it’s actually very good. We agree. Argument over. Just come. Monday, July 23, in the lobby at 8pm.

Our latest Live Music and Movies event is next weekend, Saturday (July 28) and Sunday (July 28), showing the 1927 Best Picture Oscar winner Wings with live music by B.REED/G.GERSH.
