Our Live Sound Cinema event this weekend screens Lotte Reiniger’s Prince Achmed, the oldest surviving feature films that, not surprisingly, has influenced artists since its release in 1926. Depicting the adventures of a Prince throughout his magical journal, the usage of the silhouette/paper-cut animation would prove to be the beginning of an artistic medium. One such influenced artist is Kara Walker (I actually first saw Prince Achmed during her solo exhibition at the Hammer Museum) who has adopted the anonymous animated figure of the silhouette to explore dark narratives of race, gender, sexuality, and violence.
