So, it’s still Django Unchained (Tickets), Zero Dark Thirty (Tickets) and Silver Linings Playbook (Tickets) this week, but there are new movies on the horizon, like Dead Man Down, the new thriller from Niels Arden Oplev (dir. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), and another one that we haven’t 100% confirmed yet, so you’ll find out later. SECRETS.
Directive 1 (Stay Up Late): De Palma & Robocop & Joy
ROBOTS WILL KILL marches on with Paul Verhoeven’s goofy, violent, biting and brilliant Robocop (Tickets), the best movie ever made. We’ll be screening this guy on 35mm this Friday and Saturday night at midnight, so hurry up and buy your tickets or there will be… — Wait, I forgot how the quote goes.
To continue our ongoing Brian De Palma series, we also have Brian De Palma’s Obsession (Tickets), a kind of saucy twist on Vertigo, where a grieving widower obesses over a woman who looks exactly like his wife. This is our last De Palma screening until the steamy Body Double next month.
Directive 2 (Eat Your Breakfast and Drink at the Same Time): What’s Eating Buster Keaton?
Our weekly trips back to 1993 have finally brought us to the doorstep of Gilbert Grape and his lovely, depressing as shit family. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (Tickets), will be screening in 35 mm this weekend at noon, it’s your chance to see Leonardo di Caprio fart in bathtubs and laugh his ass off. Oh, wait, no, he almost dies, right.
In case you missed our sold out Valentine’s Day screening of Buster Keaton’s The Navigator (Tickets) accompanied by the trio of Gersh/Reed/Knoche, you’ll have two more chances to see this Live + Sound + Cinema event Saturday and Sunday at noon.
Directive 3 (Special Events): Found Footage Festival Returns
On Thursday, Feb 21, Joe and Nick from Found Footage Festival are back for another VCR Party (Tickets), which will feature the debut a training video made specially for Nitehawk by FFF. Guests will include Michael Lawrence (Conan), Eliot Glazer (Shit New Yorkers Say), and Jess Dweck (Fallon).
Directive 4 (Classified): Okay, fine, Cafe Screenings
For Simpsons Club this week (10pm, in the cafe), we will be screening Episodes 6-10, which include the debut of Lisa’s saxamaphone, Albert Brooks’s first appearance, and the one where Marge almost has an affair with a bowling alley Don Juan. We’ll also include some news reports, more Ullman shorts and whatever else I can dig up on the internet between now and Monday.
Screen Shots is your monthly chance to drink along with some of your favorite movies, and this month is a doozie. Starting at 9pm in the cafe, we will be playing a drinking game to Anchorman, so get your liver ready to cope with all of that scoooootch.
