John Carpenter directed some our favorite movies here at Nitehawk — Escape from New York, The Thing, Halloween — the list goes on and on. Carpenter’s films are iconic, z-level trash that’s elevated by his tight control of mood, character and sound. Much of this can be credited to Carpenter’s masterful use of music, which he composed himself, oftentimes alongside musician Alan Howarth.

His synth-laden scores build a rich, sinister mood through many of his movies, and below we’ve put together some of our favorite Carpenter and Howarth tracks, including snippets from Dark Star, The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween III and more.
