Music Driven: This is England (Shane Meadows, 2006)
A portrait of England under Thatcher’s bootheel, Shane Meadows’ This is England is a personal story of a young skinhead headbutting and cursing his way through working-class life. Music played a major role in the lives of UK Skinheads, whose style developed out of West Indian culture and Mod style, favoring ska, 2-tone, reggae and punk.
Below we’ve put together a ska-heavy playlist inspired by the film’s soundtrack, including songs from The Specials, Toots and the Maytals, Lee “Scratch” Perry. Step back into London in the early 80’s, things kind of sucked, but at least the music was good.
