We’re just piling the movies on this week, bringing back lyrical Italiano Oscar front-runner The Great Beauty (Buy Tickets) for some screenings, as well as Alexander Payne’s fantastic Bruce Dern-led comedy Nebraska (Buy Tickets).
We’re also not getting rid of anything this week, so that means we also have: Inside Llewyn Davis (Buy Tickets), Dallas Buyers Club (Buy Tickets), August: Osage County (Buy Tickets), and both the Live Action (Buy Tickets) and Animated (Buy Tickets) Oscar Nominated Shorts.
So there you have it, we have all the movies.
Art Seen: Bluebeard
Thursday, 7:30pm | This month’s Art Seen pick is Edgar G. Ulmer’s serial killer fable Bluebeard (Buy Tickets). The film puts the darkness of artistic failure on murderous display. As one of the very first serial killer movies, it gleans from the notorious tales of Jack the Ripper and Bluebeard but remains, to this day, wholly unique.
Midnites That Will Kill You
We continue our Japanese Intensity series with the American remake of The Ring (Buy Tickets). Directed by Gore Verbinski, The Ring ushered in a wave of western interest in J-Horror, as well as a wave of calling your friends and whispering that you’re going to kill them in a week.
There was so much demand for tickets to our True Romance (Buy Tickets) film feast that we added a pair of midnite screenings. Bring a date, bring some stolen drugs; you know, make it special.
This weekend we’re also screening the new restoration of Abel Ferrera’s rape-revenge thriller Ms. 45 (Buy Tickets), about a Garment district seamstress who’s violently assaulted and then goes all Charles Bronson on just about every guy she comes across.
Buster Keaton Meets Buster Bunny
We’ve invited Reel Orchestrette back to Nitehawk to perform their live score to Buster Keaton’s Seven Chances (Buy Tickets) this weekend. In the film, Buster Keaton plays a young man on the verge of inheriting a fortune, the trick, though, is that he has to get married to someone (anyone) before 7pm on his 27th birthday to get any of the money. Happy hunting, Buster.
The Spoons, Toons and Booze (Buy Tickets) dudes are back, packing a bunch of discount brand cereal for their monthly cartoon hootenanny. Unlimited cereal bar, all sorts of silly cocktails and, no doubt, quite a few romantically themed episodes of your Saturday Morning favorites.
Monday, 10pm, Free | Find your soul-mate this week at Simpsons Club, as we screen the stone-cold classic episode “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer,” where Homer downs a couple of Guatemalan Insanity Peppers and wanders around town hallucinating coyotes that sound like Johnny Cash. On top of that there’s X-Files crossover, “The Springfield Files,” cabin fever yarn “Mountain of Madness,” and “The Twisted World of Marge Simpson,” where Marge builds a start-up selling pretzels and Homer gets caught up in the mob.
