Japanese Intensity: Akira (1988, Katsuhiro Ohtomo)
Friday, February 21 & Saturday, February 22; Midnite | Buy Tickets

I have a tendency to gravitate towards things that feel like actual relics of popular culture — it’s why I held up a line of 8-year-olds at the American History Museum when I got to the Kermit the Frog display. “Look at Kermit! He’s on a stump! Get out of my way, kid! *shove*”

In this regard, animation cels are pretty neat. They’re actual frames from the film, works drawn by the original artists, sometimes marked with directors’ notes or shot numbers — it’s more than memorabilia, it’s an actual slice of art.

Thanks to our recently departed Bar Manager, Jen Marshall (she’s not dead, she just doesn’t work here anymore), we have these lovely slices of Akira on our office walls. Since we’re screening the film this weekend, it seemed like a good time to share.
