Robot Carnival

This screening of Robot Carnival will feature a 35mm print of the U.S. theatrical dub of the film produced by Streamline Pictures.

Released on video in Japan, but theatrically in the U.S., animated anthology film Robot Carnival collects nine shorts on robotics and artificial intelligence from nine up-and-coming anime directors of the day. Featuring a wide-range of styles and influences, the film kickstarted the careers of directors like Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), Yasuomi Umetsu (Kite, Mezzo Forte), and Hiroyuki Kitakubo (Roujin Z, Golden Boy) and several others who graduated to some of the most popular titles of the 1980s (Bubblegum Crisis, City Hunter, Char’s Counterattack, Urotsukidoji).

Fist of the North Star

This screening of Fist of the North Star will feature a 35mm print of the U.S. theatrical dub of the film produced by Streamline Pictures.

A full-scale nuclear war has left the planet a burned-out wasteland with the remnants of humanity are picked apart by murderous marauders. Wandering alone in the wastes is Kenshiro, the Fist of the North Star, a master of the Hokuto Shinken – a powerful martial arts style that basically amounts to punching bad guys so hard they explode. A hyper-violent classic from director Toyoo Ashida (Vampire Hunter D).

The Princess Bride

A fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love. He must find her after a long separation and save her. They must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin to be reunited with each other. Based on the William Goldman novel “The Princess Bride” which earned its own loyal audience.

Orlando

Starring: Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane, Lothaire Bluteau, John Wood, Charlotte Valandrey

In 1600, nobleman Orlando (Tilda Swinton) inherits his parents’ house, thanks to Queen Elizabeth I, who commands the young man to never change. After a disastrous affair with Russian princess Sasha, Orlando looks for solace in the arts before being appointed ambassador to Constantinople in 1700, where war is raging. One morning, Orlando is shocked to wake up as a woman and returns home, struggling as a female to retain her property as the centuries roll by.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS is a strange, beautiful, and surreal exploration of a young woman coming of age.

Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.

Firestarter

As youths, Andy McGee (David Keith) and his future wife, Vicky (Heather Locklear), participated in secret experiments, allowing themselves to be subjected to mysterious medical tests. Years later, the couple’s daughter, Charlie (Drew Barrymore), begins to exhibit the ability of setting fires solely with her mind. This volatile talent makes the youngster extremely dangerous and soon she becomes a target for the enigmatic agency known as “The Shop.”

The Holy Mountain

In a corrupt, greed-fueled world, a powerful alchemist leads a Christ-like character and seven materialistic figures to the Holy Mountain, where they hope to achieve enlightenment. La montaña sagrada (The Holy Mountain, reissued as The Sacred Mountain) is a 1973 Mexican surreal fantasy film directed, written, produced, co-scored, co-edited by and starring Alejandro Jodorowsky, who also participated as a set designer and costume designer on the film.

Dragonslayer

A terrible dragon is terrorizing the medieval land of Urland in the 6th century. Representatives from the kingdom seek the assistance of the wizard Ulrich (Ralph Richardson) to defeat the dragon immediately — Urland has been delivering virgins to appease the dragon, and their princess (Chloe Salaman) has rigged the lottery system they use in order to sacrifice herself next. But when Ulrich is killed, the task to confront the dragon falls to the wizard’s apprentice, Galen (Peter MacNicol).
