Sundays on Fire: Secret Hong Kong 35mm Feature

Warning: Images are not from the movies we’re showing. Trust us, you can’t imagine what we’re showing!

We’re starting the new year off with a bang! A paranoid emperor sees traitors everywhere, so his palace brainiac develops an unstoppable weapon and suddenly if you say a bad word about the emperor — you’re dead! But absolute power breeds absolute corruption and soon the soldiers tasked with committing illegal murders are losing their minds and going on the run — off with their heads! One of the most iconic old school martial arts movies ever made, this gory, gothic tale of airborne destruction spawned numerous imitators but nothing beats the real thing. Prepare for your skull to explode! This movie never screens, and it especially never screens in glorious 35mm so you’re in for a treat. This is probably the same print that played Times Square grindhouses in the early ’70s, so it’s a lean, mean, grimy trash-terpiece — just like this movie!

Heaven

Starring: Michael Agbabian, James Allport, Lazaro Arvizu, Stephen Augustine

The FOFIF starts off the new year contemplating the universe with Diane Keaton’s first film, Heaven. To make an additional $10 donation to The Future of Film is Female (a non-profit org), select the “Event + Donation” ticket on the checkout screen.

The great Diane Keaton conceived, produced, wrote and directed her first film Heaven in 1987; a documentary which takes a wonderfully lighthearted look at the Great Beyond. Keaton interspersed outrageous interviews with extraordinary film footage from such European and American film classics as Metropolis, Green Pastures and Stairway to Heaven. It is truly the ultimate coming attraction! Pull up a cloud and take a ride through Heaven.

Nuts!

Starring: Gene Tognacci, Andy Boswell, John Causby, Kelly Mizell, Jeff Pillars

Inventive and wildly fun, Nuts! recounts the mostly-true story of John Romulus Brinkley, a Kansas doctor who in 1917 discovered that he could cure impotence by transplanting goat testicles into men. From there, the story only gets more bizarre.

Mixing hand-drawn animated reenactments, interviews, archival footage, and a highly unreliable narrator, Nuts! traces Brinkley’s rise from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity, wealth, and influence. Along the way, he transplants thousands of goat testicles, amasses an enormous fortune, is (sort of) elected Governor of Kansas, invents junk mail and the infomercial, builds the world’s most powerful radio station, and generally annoys the heck out of the establishment.

Filmmaker Penny Lane (Our Nixon) has skillfully borrowed a page from her subject – charming viewers into believing the unbelievable, building their trust and excitement, until the final chapter bares the painful truth and reveals the doctor for what he truly was. Nuts! reminds us that our love of (and need for) compelling narratives is exactly what makes us so endlessly susceptible to being conned.
