City of Women mimics what it would be like for man to be finally looked at by a woman’s gaze and the consequent loss of power that this experience might generate.” – Masculinity & Italian Cinema

Federico Fellini’s epic 1980 fantasia introduced the start of the Maestro’s delirious late period. A surrealist tour-de-force filmed on soundstages and locations alike, and overflowing with the same sensory (and sensual) invention heretofore found only in the classic movie-musicals (and Fellini’s own oeuvre), City of Women/La città delle donne taps into the era’s restless youth culture, coalescing into nothing less than Fellini’s post-punk opus.

Marcello Mastroianni appears as Fellini’s alter ego in a semi-reprise of his character from 8 1/2, Snàporaz. As though passing into a dream, the charismatic avatar finds himself initiated into a phantasmagoric world where women–or an idea of women–have taken power, and which is structured like an array of psychosexual set-pieces, culminating in a bravura hot-air balloon that decisively sticks the “anti” up into “climax.”

The Decameron

Open display of sexuality and healthy display of power are at play in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s novel, THE DECAMERON.

A 35mm presentation.

Pier Paolo Pasolini weaves together a handful of Giovanni Boccaccio’s fourteenth-century moral tales in this picturesque free-for-all. The Decameron explores the delectations and dark corners of an earlier and, as the filmmaker saw it, less compromised time. Among the chief delights are a young man’s exploits with a gang of grave robbers, a flock of randy nuns who sin with a strapping gardener, and Pasolini’s appearance as a pupil of the painter Giotto, at work on a massive fresco. One of the director’s most popular films, The Decameron, transposed to Naples from Boccaccio’s Florence, is a cutting takedown of the pieties surrounding religion and sex. – Criterion.

Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key

Despite the orgies and abuse, women take charge in Sergio Martino’s classic giallo, YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY (Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave).

There can’t be an Italian series about sex without including a giallo and Sergio Martino’s Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key is one of the more dizzyingly unique offerings. Very loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Black Cat, the film features a burned out writer named Oliviero who lives in his Venice estate with delusions of his dead mother in his imagination. He is also a degenerate who sleeps with his maid and his ex-student, hosts orgies, and humiliates his wife Irina in front of strangers. When a number of women are murdered in grisly fashion, Oliviero becomes a prime suspect. In classic giallo style, it’s a mystery to find out who is killing the women but this time, the surviving women take things into their own hands.

Marriage Italian Style is a classic Italian combination of sex and humor starring two cinematic legends, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. When handsome, successful Domenico (Mastroianni) first meets the sexy young waif Filomena ( Loren) in Naples during World War II, he is instantly smitten. Flash forward to the postwar years, and the two meet again, sparking a passionate affair that spans two decades. But when Filomena — who has now become Domenico’s kept woman and has secretly borne his children — learns that her lover is planning to wed another, she stops at nothing to hook him into marrying her instead. Filmed at the cusp of the sexual revolution, the film uses and pokes at the stereotypical roles of men and women that were on the verge of being upended.

As one staff member puts it, “the most damaged population of youth that exists in society today.” Filming over the course of a full year, brothers Brent and Craig Renaud tell the raw and emotional stories of the incredible kids who seek shelter at the Covenant House, and the staff struggling to work miracles everyday on their behalf.

555

Nitehawk and Vimeo present the New York premiere of “555,” with creators Kate Berlant, John Early and Andrew DeYoung in person!

From the minds of Kate Berlant, John Early and Andrew DeYoung, “555” is an anthology miniseries of five short films that unfold in a stark, humid, surreality of Hollywood. These short, cinematic fairy tales are set in tinsel town, where status is everything and the stakes are high.

The backdrop is big dreams, and in the foreground, the humiliations of clawing one’s way toward them. Each episode focuses on a fraught relationship between two characters, where ambition prevails over empathy. Among the wildly varied characters: a young Mama Rose type and her mute child, two sensual but ignorant acting students, an agent turned artist by tragedy and his partner who must watch his grotesque fall. Each episode zooms in on characters toiling in different corners of a Hollywood hellscape. Will greed, egotism, ignorance and desire consume them? Or can they escape dark fates by clinging to rare moments of tenderness?

Fast forward to one year later and the person, dressed in a slicker and wielding a hook for a hand, is out for revenge!
