20th Century Women

Set in Santa Barbara, the film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent  son, Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion.  Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing — via Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor.

20th Century Women is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us – and the times that form us – as this makeshift family forges fragile connections that will mystify and inspire them through their lives.

The Colossus of Destiny – A Melvins Tale

Nitehawk’s MUSIC DRIVEN series presents a screening of the new documentary on The Melvins, THE COLOSSUS OF DESTINY – A MELVINS TALE.

Q&A with director Bob Hannam.

The Colossus Of Destiny – A Melvins Tale is a film about a band who have defied all the rules, for over 33 years and counting, and still managed to succeed and do it their own way. This is the journey of band members King Buzzo and Dale Crover which leads us from the backwards-waters of the Chehalis River in Washington State, down through the = Golden Gate of Northern California, finally settling into the Los Angeles River Basin of Southern California with the rest of the world thrown in along the way.

Witness first hand the beliefs and attitudes, values and obscenities, slows and fasts, triumphs and toils, loves and hates, wits and giggles of a hugely talented and highly influential band. Hear what the countless number of peers, collaborators, understudies, admirers, even haters, have to say about their encounters with The Melvins over the past 3 decades and more. And come away with a lesson in how to survive in the wicked world of the music biz without taking yourself too damn seriously.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, John Cleese, Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, John Hurt, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman

Harry Potter is just an orphan boy living underneath some stairs in Surrey, a typically dreary place for Britain. On his eleventh birthday, a friendly giant named Hagrid comes a-knocking, and reveals to Harry that he’s no ordinary boy — but a wizard, the Boy Who Lived; the only person in the whole of the world to survive the wrath of the evil Lord Voldemort. Before long, Harry’s got himself a wand and a broom, and is off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – a secret academy where young magic users hone their craft. Along with his two new friends, B-student Ron and egghead Hermione, Harry sniffs out a conspiracy to bring back He Who Shall Not Be Named, and the trio set out to stop it by recovering the powerful Sorcerer’s Stone. Expelliarmus!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Tom Felton, Emma Thompson

Sirius Black has escaped! One of Voldemort’s most devilish supporters, Sirius is notorious for betraying Harry’s parents, and has clawed his way out of the wizarding world’s own Gitmo in order to get his hands on Harry. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Prisoner of Azkaban is when the series really hits its stride. Richly visual and loaded with new goodies (Dementors! Werewolves! Time travel!), the film follows Harry – now entering his dreamy Tigerbeat phase – as he and his friends learn first-hand about the true dangers that come with being a wizard. Expecto Patronum!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Potter’s fifth year at Hogwarts School sees a defense against evil in the David Yates’ directed HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.

J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” was published in 2003.

The Devil’s got a name and it’s Lord Voldemort! The Dark Lord has returned to the flesh and has begun rallying troops. Trouble is, none of the bureaucrats at the Ministry of Magic believe young Harry Potter about Voldemort’s return. To quell the growing dissent from Hogwarts, the Ministry puts the putrid, pink Dolores Umbridge at the helm of the school, who cracks down on students and faculty and outlaws all lessons on Defense Against the Dark Arts. With his host of mentors imprisoned or in hiding, it’s up to Harry to form a secret society to fight against the growing threat of Voldemort and learn a few new tricks under Umbridge’s upturned nose. Stupefy!
