Blow-Up

Starring: David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, John Castle, Jane Birkin

When the talented but bored and cocky fashion photographer Thomas takes pictures of a couple in a desolate park, he unwittingly embarks on a strange journey of captured infidelity and possible murder. Blow-Up is set in the swinging mid-1960s London and it evokes all the mod style and sensibility style of the time period. Importantly through Antonioni’s own camera, the film examines the power and potential of the photographic medium during a period when its boundaries to depict reality were truly being tested. Although this is Antonioni’s first English language film, as with most of the director’s work, Blow-Up shares in the lone figure faced with a problem of his/her own making, their journey marked amongst a vast landscape.

Whiplash

In WHIPLASH, a young musician struggles to make it as a top jazz drummer

Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller) is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite east coast music conservatory. Plagued by the failed writing career of his father, Andrew hungers day and night to become one of the greats. Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man’s life. Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability—and his sanity.

Birdman

A washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory.

Birdman is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play.  In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.

Bjork: Biophilia Live

Icelandic artist, Björk, performs songs from her eighth album with evocative visuals provided by designers from around the world.

Biophilia Live is a concert film by Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland that captures the human element of Björk’s multi-disciplinary multimedia project: Biophilia. Recorded live at Björk’s show at London’s Alexandra Palace in 2013, the film features Björk and her band performing every song on Biophilia and more using a broad variety of instruments – some digital, some traditional and some completely unclassifiable.

The Shining

Starring: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

Stanley Kubrick’s filmic version of Stephen King’s novel The Shining is the most beautiful mash up of terror that includes architecture, madness, a time/space collapse, and surreal imagery. The Shining takes place essentially in one place, The Overlook Hotel, that Jack Torrance (starring Here’s Johnny! Jack Nicholson) shares with his wife and psychic son as caretakers for the winter. It doesn’t take long for the hotel to consume his thoughts and propel him to do the unthinkable…murder his family.

200 Cigarettes

Celebrate the new year by going back in time with our brunch screening of 200 CIGARETTES!

We all know that making the most out of New Year’s Eve is an annual exercise in torment but for the characters in 200 Cigarettes, their NYE is one for the books. Set in New York in 1981, this comedy film highlights all the fears-of-missing-out associated with ringing in the new year: not having a date, not liking the date you have, throwing a party that no one attends, and never finding the party! The film’s laughs and killer soundtrack are the perfect way to relax before your NYE kicks in. Plus, Elvis Costello!

Bad luck seems to follow Clark Griswold and his family no matter where they go or what they do. The perpetual optimist, our dear Clark (don’t you just love the young Chevy Chase?) tries to make the holidays a special family event by chopping down the biggest tree in the forest, hanging a million Christmas lights, and dealing with his obnoxious visiting family members. He does this all while banking on his holiday bonus – but will it come? This third installment of the National Lampoon Vacation film series was written by the beloved John Hughes (just like another popular holiday flick, Home Alone).

Love Actually Holiday Event

All we want for Christmas is YOU and that’s why Nitehawk & Brightest Young Things are throwing a LOVE ACTUALLY holiday party featuring a live performance of Christmas Carols by the Mistletones!

Get into the holiday spirit with Ugly sweaters! Delicious themed drinks! Live music!

Love Actually is a modern day holiday classic that follows the complicated love lives of eight couples in the lead up to Christmas in jolly ol’ London. Set against the comeback story of the once great Billy Mack and a Christmas themed version of his old hit song “Love is All Around,” these loved up or love lorn characters are all somewhat intertwined: there’s grieving, breakups, near hookups, long-time marriages versus first-time marriages, and first loves. At the holiday heart of it all, and just a darn good time, Love Actually is a celebration that love is indeed all around us!
