To Be Twenty

Two young women search for sexual freedom but find something different in Fernando Di Leo’s TO BE TWENTY (AVERE VENT’ANNI).

Celebrate Italy with our pre-party that starts at 9:30pm in Lo-Res featuring Italo DJ set by Damian PM of (Health Klub) (Friday night only) and the specialty cocktail with Gruppo Campari that will also be available in the theater!

Each audience member will receive a special gift courtesy of our partner, Babeland!

Better known for his crime movies, Fernando Di Leo’s To Be Twenty (Avere Vent’Anni) takes the sexuality inherent to all his films and puts it at the core of the story. Twenty, beautiful, sexy and liberated, and fed up with their provincial lives, Lia and Tina decide to hitchhike their way to Rome to find a commune where they can stay and live the life of free love…or so they think. Things don’t go as they have planned and soon they become involved in prostitution, the police and an aggressive gang which all culminates with a brutal and unexpected violent end. Part of the censoring of many Italian films of the 1960s and 1970s that showed sex and politics on screen.

Note: we are screening the uncensored director’s cut which contains the original and rather violent ending.

Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key

Despite the orgies and abuse, women take charge in Sergio Martino’s classic giallo, YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY (Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave).

Each audience member will receive a special gift courtesy of Babeland! Also featuring an Italian spirit or cocktail with Gruppo Campari.

There can’t be an Italian series about sex without including a giallo and Sergio Martino’s Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key is one of the more dizzyingly unique offerings. Very loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Black Cat, the film features a burned out writer named Oliviero who lives in his Venice estate with delusions of his dead mother in his imagination. He is also a degenerate who sleeps with his maid and his ex-student, hosts orgies, and humiliates his wife Irina in front of strangers. When a number of women are murdered in grisly fashion, Oliviero becomes a prime suspect. In classic giallo style, it’s a mystery to find out who is killing the women but this time, the surviving women take things into their own hands.

Marriage Italian Style

Nitehawk NAUGHTIES and Babeland celebrate Valentine’s Day (and the launch of the 2017 program BODY POLITICS) with a 35mm presentation of Vittorio de Sica’s MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE (Matrimonio all’Italiana).

Each audience member will receive a special Valentine gift courtesy of Babeland! Also featuring the Italian-inspired cocktail with Gruppo Campari: AMERICANO (Campari, Cinzano Rosso Vermouth, soda water)

After-party in Lo-Res featuring Italo DJ set by Damian PM of (Health Klub) and Eli Cohen of (Alliance Upholstery).

Marriage Italian Style is a classic Italian combination of sex and humor starring two cinematic legends, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. When handsome, successful Domenico (Mastroianni) first meets the sexy young waif Filomena ( Loren) in Naples during World War II, he is instantly smitten. Flash forward to the postwar years, and the two meet again, sparking a passionate affair that spans two decades. But when Filomena — who has now become Domenico’s kept woman and has secretly borne his children — learns that her lover is planning to wed another, she stops at nothing to hook him into marrying her instead. Filmed at the cusp of the sexual revolution, the film uses and pokes at the stereotypical roles of men and women that were on the verge of being upended.

Shelter

Nitehawk’s LOCAL COLOR and Tribeca Film Festival present a special screening of the new documentary SHELTER.

Q&A with directors Brent and Craig Renaud with Loren Hammonds, Associate Programmer at Tribeca Film Festival.

From the team behind the Peabody Award winning Last Chance High, comes Shelter: an intimate documentary following a year in the life of homeless youth in New Orleans.

At the Covenant House, located on the outskirts of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana, the doors never close, and there is always room for one more.  On any given day, a constant stream of young people carrying everything they own in plastic garbage bags fills the courtyard.  The prospective residents are just teenagers, but have already been labeled drug addicts, schizophrenics, criminals and outcasts. As one staff member puts it, “the most damaged population of youth that exists in society today.” Filming over the course of a full year, brothers Brent and Craig Renaud tell the raw and emotional stories of the incredible kids who seek shelter at the Covenant House, and the staff struggling to work miracles everyday on their behalf.

The Phantom of the Opera

Starring: Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry

Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, this silent horror classic features an aspiring young opera singer Christine Daaé (Mary Philbin) who discovers that she has a mysterious admirer intent on helping her become a lead performer. The enigmatic masked presence is Erik, also known as the Phantom (Lon Chaney), a horribly disfigured recluse who lives underneath the Paris Opera House. When the Phantom takes Christine prisoner and demands her devotion and affection, her suitor, Vicomte Raoul de Chagny (Norman Kerry), sets out to rescue her.

The film chronicles the origins, community-building, influence and ultimate closure of one of Brooklyn’s best DIY venues, ironically at the hands of a former champion of their efforts.

555

Nitehawk and Vimeo present the New York premiere of “555,” with creators Kate Berlant, John Early and Andrew DeYoung in person!

From the minds of Kate Berlant, John Early and Andrew DeYoung, “555” is an anthology miniseries of five short films that unfold in a stark, humid, surreality of Hollywood. These short, cinematic fairy tales are set in tinsel town, where status is everything and the stakes are high.

The backdrop is big dreams, and in the foreground, the humiliations of clawing one’s way toward them. Each episode focuses on a fraught relationship between two characters, where ambition prevails over empathy. Among the wildly varied characters: a young Mama Rose type and her mute child, two sensual but ignorant acting students, an agent turned artist by tragedy and his partner who must watch his grotesque fall. Each episode zooms in on characters toiling in different corners of a Hollywood hellscape. Will greed, egotism, ignorance and desire consume them? Or can they escape dark fates by clinging to rare moments of tenderness?
