UHF

Starring: ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Victoria Jackson, Kevin McCarthy, Michael Richards

Part of our recipe book series NITEHAWK CINEMA PRESENTS. Show your ticket at the bar after the movie to buy a copy of the book for only $20!

George Newman (Yankovic) is a man of vision. He can’t hold down a job to save his life, but, still, he’s a man of vision. After daydreaming his way out of a gig flipping burgers, George’s uncle bequeaths the young dreamer the reins of the struggling UHF station, Channel 62. Dead last in the ratings and desperate for programming, George starts letting every flight of fancy and weirdo onto the airwaves, everything from “Conan the Librarian” to “Stanley Spadowski’s Clubhouse,” a kids’ show hosted by a borderline nutcase (Michael Richards) who shoots children in the face with a firehouse (Don’t worry, they love it). Naturally, Channel 62 becomes a ratings sensation — which doesn’t sit well with the corporate grease-balls over at Channel 8 who sic the FCC on George and his merry band.

Thelma

Starring: June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg

Inspired by a real-life experience of director Josh Margolin’s own grandmother, Thelma puts a clever spin on movies like Mission: Impossible, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business — despite what her daughter Gail (Parker Posey), son-in-law Alan (Clark Gregg), or grandson Danny might believe.

The Gate

Starring: Stephen Dorff, Christa Denton, Louis Tripp, Scot Denton, Deborah Grover

When Al (Christa Denton) and Glenn’s (Stephen Dorff) parents (Deborah Grover, Scot Denton) leave town for the weekend, Al uses the opportunity to throw a party while little brother Glenn and his friend Terry (Louis Tripp) decide to explore a hole left by a tree-removal service in the backyard. When unexplainable phenomena begin occurring, Terry — with the help of his extensive heavy-metal music collection — comes to the conclusion that he and Glenn have accidentally opened a gateway to hell.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Starring: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould

Dapper Danny Ocean (George Clooney) is a man of action. Less than 24 hours into his parole from a New Jersey penitentiary, the wry, charismatic thief is already rolling out his next plan. Following three rules: Don’t hurt anybody, don’t steal from anyone who doesn’t deserve it, and play the game like you’ve got nothing to lose. Danny orchestrates the most sophisticated, elaborate casino heist in history.

Sugar & Spice

Starring: Marla Sokoloff, Marley Shelton, Melissa George, Mena Suvari, Rachel Blanchard, James Marsden

When Jack (James Marsden) and Diane (Marley Shelton) find themselves in an unexpected adult situation, the A-Squad comes to their rescue. In order to help their friend Diane, the A-Squad goes where no cheerleader has gone before: taking on a little after-school project known as bank robbery. But the A-Squad does things their way — with sugar and spice — forever changing their friendship, their future and the nation’s notion of teen spirit.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Starring: Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Catherine O’Hara

Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Janet Planet

Starring: Zoe Ziegler, Julianne Nicholson, Luke Philip Bosco, June Walker Grossman, Abby Harri, Elias Koteas, Will Patton

In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut.

DOA: Dead or Alive

Starring: Devon Aoki, Jaime Pressly, Holly Valance, Sarah Carter, Eric Roberts

The best fighters on the planet, including ninja princess Kasumi (Devon Aoki), wrestler Tina (Jaime Pressly), and thief/assassin Christie (Holly Valance), receive invitations to compete for a $10 million prize on a specially outfitted island. However, tournament organizer Dr. Victor Donovan (R<>S favorite Eric Roberts, magnificently quaffed as usual) seems to have a hidden agenda in staging the games.

In the hands of Hong Kong director Corey Yuen (Yes, Madam), this video game adaptation premise overflows with high drama and cartoonish action, the camera in motion as much as the bodies it strives to capture. It’s all shiny, gaudy, color-splattered fun, with a bonus of erstwhile pro-wrestler Kevin Nash (Tarzan to Magic Mike fans) appearing as Tina’s over-protective father.

Trap

Starring: Josh Hartnett, Hayley Mills, Ariel Donoghue

A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.
