Zero Dark Thirty

Recent history plays out on-screen in Zero Dark Thirty following the September 11th attacks as the United States goes on one of the biggest manhunts in history to find Osama bin Laden.

As she did in The Hurt Locker, Academy Award Winner Kathryn Bigelow continues her usage of an obsessed fictional character to recount historical events in the post 9/11 landscape with Zero Dark Thirty. Here we have Maya (Jessica Chastain), a CIA operative who becomes an integral part in the hunt for Al Qaeda’s leader Osama bin Laden. Aside from the eventual death of bin Laden by the Navy SEAL Team Six, the film focuses on the questionable interrogation practices of prisoners and detainees through Maya’s own reluctance but ultimate belief that these tactics are beneficial. With emotions raw from a nation still dealing with the ramifications of the “War on Terror,” Zero Dark Thirty is guaranteed to hit the hearts of many.

Body Double

Starring: Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Dennis Franz

There’s no such thing as coincidence in Brian De Palma’s homage to Vertigo and Rear Window.

Jake Scully (Craig Wasson) is a claustrophobic b-movie actor who had to couch surf after finding his girlfriend in bed with another woman. You’d think that would be enough adventure for one man but he has a whole lot more in store for him when he starts spying on a beautiful exhibitionist across the street from his friend’s apartment.

Vcr Party

The Sessions

John Hawkes stars in a story of triumph over disability that takes the form of an uplifting sex comedy.

Mark, a wry and chatty 38-year-old (John Hawkes), just wants to get laid. One small problem: he has polio and is paralyzed from the neck down. First, he must get the permission of his priest, Father Brendan (William H. Macy) who weighs the cosmic scales and declares, “In my heart I believe He will give you a free pass on this one.” Then, he has to find a willing partner. She turns out to be Cheryl (Helen Hunt), a married woman and mother who works as a sexual surrogate, helping the disabled and the mentally challenged to explore their sexuality.

The heart of The Sessions is the scenes between Mark and Cheryl, which are uncommonly frank about sex and nudity, and lay out the mechanics of Cheryl’s work in precise detail. Hawkes, who has earned much acclaim for playing creeps and cretins recently (Winter’s Bone, Martha Marcy May Marlene) achieves the seemingly impossible here, capturing the depth and soul of a thoughtful, charming poet using only his face. Hunt is even better as a woman who has no problem taking off her clothes for strangers, but can’t have a single honest conversation with the husband who takes her for granted.

We see 1960s London as a place of frustration and violence as told through the eyes of Jimmy, a disillusioned young man who hates his job and cannot relate to his family. But after his dream trip to Brighton turns into a crash of disappointment and reality, his fantasy life of nothing but fun turns into a teenage wasteland.

Seven Psychopaths

The lengths a struggling writer in Los Angeles will go to find inspiration.

In his follow up to his feature film debut (2008’s incredible In Bruges), British director Martin McDonagh gives us another dark, violent, comedy about misguided misfits. You can call this one Hollywood Noir full of blood and humor. When Marty (played by Colin Farrell) has difficulty finishing his screenplay Seven Psychopaths, he gets himself mixed up with all kinds of insanity including dog thievery, unemployed actors, gangsters in LA’s criminal underworld, and Christopher Walken. And for the love of Shih Tzu, Marty will have one brilliant script…if he survives to tell the tale.

The seven psychopaths are: Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, Abbie Cornish, and Olga Kurylenko.
