What could possibly be more frightening than having the ultimate child-friendly figure, Santa Claus, turn out to be a maniacal killer? Tales from the Crypt did it back in the early 1970s and the vivid image of a deranged Saint Nic has never left our collective conscience. Silent Night, Deadly Night brings Christmas horror home and down the chimney when an adult-age Billy puts on a Santa costume at his new job and starts hacking people to bits. He’s unable to escape his performing his cruel actions but, then again, witnessing your parents’ murder and then suffering abuse at the hands of a frustrated nun doesn’t bode well for normal adult behavior. Silent Night, Deadly Night is a certain kind of holiday classic – it slays.

That same night, South American politico and drug profiteer Ramon Esperanza (Franco Nero) is arriving in U.S. custody. The stages of life are told through multiple sketches and songs by the British comedy troupe. The seven parts of life cover birth, growing up, war, middle age, organ transplants, old age and death. Not all stages are singular: “Part I: The Miracle of Birth” is from the perspective of an ignored woman in labor, and of a Roman Catholic couple with too many children, and “Part VII: Death” encompasses a funeral and heaven. Added are three unrelated skits placed in the beginning, middle and end.
Starring: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin
Brian Cohen (Graham Chapman) is an average young Jewish man, but through a series of ridiculous events, he gains a reputation as the Messiah. When he’s not dodging his followers or being scolded by his shrill mother (Terry Jones), the hapless Brian has to contend with the pompous Pontius Pilate (Michael Palin) and acronym-obsessed members of a separatist movement. Rife with Monty Python’s signature absurdity, the tale finds Brian’s life paralleling Biblical lore, albeit with many more laughs.
Starring: Dolph Lundgren, Brian Benben, Betsy Brantley, Matthias Hues
When a mysterious extraterrestrial with a glorious bleached mullet starts vaporizing humans to harvest – let’s call it “cosmic narcotics” – hard-nosed cop Jack Caine (Dolph Lundgren) is forced to team up with an FBI agent who is lacking in both humor and patience. Together, they chase the leather-clad space menace whose weapons include razor-sharp CDs!
Part sci-fi thriller, part buddy-cop actioner, and notably a Christmas-set movie, Dark Angel (aka I Come in Peace) is an explosion of over-the-top set pieces as only genre master Craig R. Baxley (Action Jackson, Stone Cold) can pull off that reinforces the eternal cinematic truth that if an alien says he comes in peace… he probably does not.
Starring: Robyn Nevin, Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote
A woman links her mother’s increasingly volatile behavior to an evil presence at their family’s decaying country home.
