Tallulah Bankhead is one of the main subjects of the new season of You Must Remember This, The Bisexuals, which is a dual biography of Bankhead’s longtime friend Libby Holman, and Bankhead’s sometime co-star, Montgomery Clift. A pre-code epic, equal parts romantic and thrilling, Devil and the Deep begins as a psychosexual drama about the marriage between a lonely trophy wife (Bankhead) and her mentally-unstable submarine captain husband (Charles Laughton, in his film debut), and turns into a naval adventure, with an action-packed climax anticipating Titanic. Stage titan Bankhead was infamously quoted as saying that she only came to Hollywood in order to seduce “that divine Gary Cooper,” who here plays the third leg of the love triangle that touches off the captain’s destructive breakdown, rendered with delicious madness by Laughton.
