The Apartment

Starring: Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray, Ray Walston, Jack Kruschen

Insurance worker C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to company bosses to use for extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) begins using Baxter’s apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake’s mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself. Soon Baxter must decide between the girl he loves and the advancement of his career.

Reign of Fire

Starring: Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey, Izabella Scorupco, Gerard Butler

The apocalypse has been imagined in many forms – extreme weather, alien invasion, pandemics. As far as we can tell, Reign of Fire is the sole film that posits “What if all the subterranean digging we do unearths a sleeping dragon that immediately multiplies itself and scorches most of the human population?”

Dirt-and-sweat laden Quinn (Christian Bale) and Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey) are at cultural odds on how to overcome the seemingly unbeatable beasts. Quinn has been nurturing a community posted up in a castle, hoping the dragons will go back into hibernation, when Van Zan and his American military muscle arrive, having had success in killing some of the creatures. Without much choice, they pool their resources and manpower, determined to survive. Directed by Rob Bowman, frequent helmer of episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and The X-Files, Reign of Fire makes great use of location, effectively creating a landscape of ash and rock, with early use of CGI that isn’t always bad. Set in 2020, from our vantage point now it feels like the only potential humanity destroyer that didn’t occur that year.

Maniac Cop 2

Starring: Robert Z’Dar, Bruce Campbell, Robert Davi, Claudia Christian, Michael Lerner, Laurene Landon

Renegade police officer Matthew Cordell (Robert Z’Dar) once roamed the streets of New York City unleashing his murderous brand of vigilante justice upon its denizens before being struck down by good cop Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell). Now, Forrest is eager to move on from those heinous events, but he is stopped short when a familiar killing spree begins. Though thought dead and gone, Cordell is back from the grave and ready to wreak his merciless havoc once more.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2

Starring: Eric Freeman, James Newman, Elizabeth Kaitan, Jean Miller

The younger sibling of the teenager who killed while dressed as Santa carries on in his brother’s bloody footsteps.

The Trouble with Angels

Starring: Rosalind Russell, Hayley Mills, June Harding, Binnie Barnes, Mary Wickes, Gypsy Rose Lee

Shedding her good-girl persona in her first non-Disney role, Hayley Mills stars as Mary Clancy, a cigarette smoking prankster goofing her way through Catholic school. She meets her match in the Mother Superior (an anti-Auntie Mame Rosalind Russell), who is not one to suffer fools, meting out reasonable punishment with a sly grin.

The last film directed by Ida Lupino, The Trouble with Angels is a rare film portraying an almost exclusively female world in which friendship is tantamount, and mischievous girls are not seen as needing their spirits broken.

NoBudge Live #36

NoBudge is happy to present a new program of eleven short films from a group of emerging indie filmmakers mostly based in New York. This edition, we’re looking at issues of (mis)communication, dynamics of friendships, and uncertainties of youth. Stylistically, it’s a mix of the surreal, naturalistic, comically absurd, and melodramatic. Eight of the films are premieres and each director will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A and Afterparty.

NoBudge is an online platform spotlighting the best in low-budget indie filmmaking. “One of the best places to sample what’s happening in low-budget cinema worldwide,” says Glenn Kenny of The New York Times. Its mission is to provide a supportive home for emerging indie filmmakers working with limited resources and without major industry connections, and to be a trusted discovery platform.
