This February, hook up with your Deuce-Paramours for an early Valentine’s rendezvous and Bud Townsend’s ‘X-rated’ musical comedy ALICE IN WONDERLAND! Produced by Bill Osco and written by Bucky Searles… with a little help from Lewis Carroll!
Virginal librarian Alice (Playboy cover-girl Kristine De Bell) nods off during her afternoon read and stumbles down more than a rabbit hole, embarking on some seriously psychedelically-sexual encounters… with Knights, Queens, Mad Hatters… to songs like “If You Haven’t Got Dreams, You Ain’t Got Nothing (19 Going on 90),” “His Ding-A-Ling Is Up,” and “What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing on a Knight Like This?”… and soft-shoes choreographed by Broadway’s Buddy Schwab (The Boyfriend, Mack and Mabel, and Camelot)!!
Shot on 35mm in 10 days on a slim $100k – plus an additional $250,000 for post-production – Osco and producer Jason Williams released the flick via their newly formed ‘General National’ distro company (yes, to be confused with the giant National General company) after every other studio passed. But joke’s on them: after premiering at the National in Times Square (with Andy Warhol in the crowd!), ALICE IN WONDERLAND went on to make $90 million globally (with nary a cent going back to any of the cast or crew)…
Fresh off his success with FLESH GORDON, legendary producer Bill Osco, who’s first uncredited producing role was 1970’s MONA: THE VIRGIN NYMPH – now considered a watershed title that helped inaugurate the ‘Golden Age of Porn’ – would then expand his career, making “straight” films like Walter R. Cichy’s COP KILLERS, and Jackie Kong’s THE BEING and NIGHT PATROL… all in a style that Vincent Canby described as “consistent vulgarity”… Kinda like your lovers on The Deuce!!

Standing Above the Clouds highlights the movement to protect Mauna Kea through the intergenerational stories of women in three Native Hawaiian families as they stand for the sacred mountain. The film follows teacher and community organizer Pua Case and her two daughters — artist-activists Hāwane Rios and Kapulei Flores — who have been called to stop the telescope since 2010. Their lives quickly become consumed with frontline actions and court proceedings and immersed in ceremonies and cultural practices. As they face opposition and arrests, they are joined by a community who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea.

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day, today is the hangover, and that means it’s time for this totally forgotten Hong Kong movie from the early 2000s. Beginning with a meet-cute, a totally charming young couple fall in love, fall into a rut, and decide to take a trip to Europe to kickstart their romance. Then their luggage gets stolen. Then this movie sinks its steel teeth into your soft brain and for the next 90 minutes it doesn’t let go. One of the unlikeliest collaborations in Hong Kong cinema produces a thriller with enough twists to keep your head spinning, enough hard-slamming action to keep your blood pumping, and enough high voltage, high impact, high wire mayhem to destroy the hardest heart. No lectures, no moralizing, no lessons about life. Just pure mayhem. With some kissing.
Starring: Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Clifton Collins Jr., Alfred Hsing
Based on the beloved novella by Denis Johnson, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), whose life unfolds during an era of unprecedented change in early 20th century America. Orphaned at a young age, Robert grows into adulthood among the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest, where he helps expand the nation’s railroad empire alongside men as unforgettable as the landscapes they inhabit. After a tender courtship, he marries Gladys (Felicity Jones) and they build a home together, though his work often takes him far from her and their young daughter. When his life takes an unexpected turn, Robert finds beauty, brutality and newfound meaning for the forests and trees he has felled.
