Big Elvis w/ True Romance

This year, the Tribeca Summer Series moves away from documentary to focus on up-and-coming short filmmakers who premiered at Tribeca this year who have been asked to select a feature the inspired them with directing their short film.

BIG ELVIS
Directed by Paul Stone | 2018 | 12 mins

Pete is an Elvis Presley impersonator in Las Vegas, but Pete is not like any Elvis impersonator you may have in mind. Pete is BIG ELVIS! At his peak, Pete tipped the scales as a 960-pound performer, but not only is Pete preternaturally talented (one fellow impersonator asserts that he has a better voice than The King himself), he also believes himself (with good reason!) to be Presley’s actual, living son.

On why they chose TRUE ROMANCE:
“When I was 29, I started my commercial production and editorial company called Firebrand Films and ran it out of Ridley and Tony Scott’s New York SoHo office for 8 years. They were my mentors early on, and being at RSA was my film school. I digitized, studied and re-edited their films on an Avid to crack the code of their genius. TRUE ROMANCE was my favorite Tony Scott film, and I have watched it at least a hundred times. I was inspired by the way that Tony used Elvis Presley as a spiritual character in TRUE ROMANCE and was fascinated to discover that Pete ‘Big Elvis’ Vallee had the same spiritual qualities.”

TRUE ROMANCE

The Quentin Tarantino penned TRUE ROMANCE certainly isn’t your run-of-the-mill love story but the passion (borderline obsession) between Clarence and his reformed hooker wife Alabama sure is palpable. A modern day Bonnie and Clyde, they meet, fall in love, and then proceed to steal a whole lot of drugs from her pimp. As with most things in love and life, things are never easy (there’s murders and mobsters), but the one thing that remains true is their romance.

Everything is Stories w/ Blood Simple.

This year, the Tribeca Summer Series moves away from documentary to focus on up-and-coming short filmmakers who premiered at Tribeca this year who have been asked to select a feature the inspired them with directing their short film.

EVERYTHING IS STORIES: REVILED AND MALIGNED
Created by Garrett Crowe, Mike Martinez and Tyler Wray
Directed by Daniel Navetta | 2018 | 22 mins
Peter Stefan, owner of Graham Putnam & Mahoney funeral parlor in Worcester, Mass., found himself thrust into the national spotlight in the spring of 2013 amid a damning controversy. With implications that still linger to this day, Stefan and his team faced the question of where to draw the line on who deserves a burial. EVERYTHING IS STORIES explores the morality behind such decision-making and how one man—during a time of universal anger, fear and sadness—stood up for what he thought was right.

On why they chose BLOOD SIMPLE.:
“The list of films that influenced our short doc is undoubtedly a long one, as just too many have been embedded in our subconscious over the years. Not having the luxury of weeks to debate and decide we landed on BLOOD SIMPLE. a film where the mood of the opening monologue alone captures the spirit of EIS and the subjects we choose to pursue. The Coen Brothers’ 1984 debut is one we’ll always look to for its nuanced characters, dark sense of humor, and ultimate beauty in the face of desperation.”

BLOOD SIMPLE.
BLOOD SIMPLE. is a dark and suspenseful thriller that begins when a Texas bar owner Marty  hires a private investigator Vissar to spy on his young cheating wife Abby and her lover Ray . From this point, the film involves plot twists and turns, murders and mistaken deaths, misunderstanding and deceit as the characters play, and prey, upon each other. Shot in such a way that plays upon the audience’s voyeurism and assumptions, BLOOD SIMPLE. continues to remain fresh and innovative – a must see on the big screen.

Crime Cutz w/ American Movie

This year, the Tribeca Summer Series moves away from documentary to focus on up-and-coming short filmmakers who premiered at Tribeca this year who have been asked to select a feature the inspired them with directing their short film.

CRIME CUTZ

On why they chose AMERICAN MOVIE:
“AMERICAN MOVIE is an example of documentary filmmaking that proves real people can be more compelling and hilarious than anything you could write.”

AMERICAN MOVIE
In this cult-favorite documentary, Mark Borchardt, an aspiring filmmaker from a working-class Wisconsin background, is set on finishing his low-budget horror movie, despite a barrage of difficulties. The Davey Foundation, a non-profit grant-giving organization, was started and continues in the name of actor, director, musician and producer David Fetzer who passed away suddenly in 2012. He was a brilliant mind and amazing talent–in writing, on stage, and in film and he was just 30 years old when he died. It was founded and is run by his friends, peers and parents and now emanates from that place of love and loss to a larger film family we have built through our six years of existence. At the heart of our organization is a desire to find and hold up young voices who are seeking to tell their stories, and to facilitate them through grants and mentorship in getting their projects made. We offer grants for playwrights, and short film filmmakers under 35 years of age, and we are thrilled to have had our grantees go on to great accolades, including Sundance, Cannes, SXSW, The Emmys and others.
