Silence of the Lambs Film Feast

Have an old friend for dinner at Nitehawk and Pat Lafrieda’s FILM FEAST presentation of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.

Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI’s training academy, is sent to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter to provide insight on another serial killer who they’re trying to capture. In a now iconic role, Anthony Hopkin’s Lecter is a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Tense, beautiful, and arresting, Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs shows the journey of a young woman sent to be both the intelligent and bait to solve the case.

As always, our Film Feasts serve each dish at the moment its inspirational scene comes on the screen!

Blond Ambition World Tour Live

Nitehawk Cinema invites you to a very special – and secret! – screening of the concert, transferred to DCP projection. Join us.

After-party with DJ Boogalow in Lo-Res Bar!

Chiba, Japan, April 13, 1990: Entertainment history changed forever when Madonna – at the pinnacle of her unprecedented, megawatt career – launched her Blond Ambition World Tour… considered by many to be the greatest music spectacle of all time. Armored with Gaultier’s platinum corset and leading a platoon of backup singers and dancers, Madonna unleashes a salvo of pop-punk transubstantiation: provocation, confession, redemption, salvation …  a masterfully conceived four-act interpretation of seventeen colossal hits … a catharsis of divine exhibitionism and showmanship.

Originally broadcast on HBO on August 5, 1990, M’s last performance – in Nice, France – became the highest-viewed special event in the cable channel’s history, with 4.5 million viewers tuning in. Hastily released the following year on laserdisc, the concert has since fallen out of print, and remains the Holy Grail for Madonna’s legions of fans.

FILMS (in order of screening)…

nite2016-theexorcistTHE EXORCIST (William Friedkin, 1973)
35mm

The power of Christ compels you…
One of the scariest movies you’ll ever see, The Exorcist continues to terrify audiences and influence films more than forty years after its release. A shocker of visuals and theme since its release, the tale a young girl inhabited by an evil entity and her actress/single-mother’s frantic search to fix her along with two priests, one full of faith and the other questioning, hits us where it hurts most…the home.

nite2016-theblackcatTHE BLACK CAT (Edgar Ulmer, 1934)
35mm
Supernatural, perhaps. Baloney, perhaps not. There are many things under the sun.
Out of a prison camp and joined by two American newlyweds, Dr. Vitus Werdegast returns to the home of Hjalmar Poelzig to seek his revenge. It’s a shocker based on an Edgar Allen Poe story complete with incest, Satanism, necrophilia, and murder starring two horror icons, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, battling against each other in an imposing architectural moment on top of the dead.

nite2016-undertheshadowUNDER THE SHADOW (Babak Anvari, 2016)
DCP

They’ll always know how to find you.
Set in Tehran at the tail end of the Iran-Iraq war, Banak Anvair’s brilliant debut feature film Under the Shadow is a terrifying mix of the real threat religious/political agenda with the supernatural threat of djinn (ghosts). A woman and her daughter remain in a crumbling apartment complex when her husband leaves for the front line. We see that her decision to leave the sanctuary of home post-revolution Iran is personally, and politically, a difficult endeavor.

nite-hellhouseTHE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (John Hough, 1974)
35mm
This house… It knows we’re here.
A perfect 1970s ghost story about a serial killer so angered by his shortcomings that he and his victims continue to haunt the infamous Belasco House. So, when scientist Lionel Barrett leads a special team of a spiritualist, a psychic medium, and his wife to uncover the truth about the home’s haunting, they’re in for some truly strange experiences. The Legend of Hell House is a naughty haunted romp that’s perfectly overacted (and even includes a ghost trap!).

nite2016-nightofthedemonsNIGHT OF THE DEMONS (Joe Augustyn, 1988) 35mm
I’ve heard stories about this place ever since I was a kid. The Hull Family met a pretty gruesome end, didn’t they?
We end the night with a real Halloween tale. Set in an abandoned funeral parlor, the Hull House, ten teenagers awaken an evil force during a seance. From then on, the released demonic spirits keep them from leaving and, naturally, turn their little soiree into a living hell. We can’t say for sure this won’t happen to all of us at Nitehawk but it’ll surely be a Nite to Dismember!

However, he begins to realize that Asami isn’t as reserved as she appears to be, leading to gradually increased tension and a harrowing climax.

Wolf Creek

Three hitchhikers find trouble in the rural outback in WOLF CREEK.

Very loosely based on real events, 2005’s Wolf Creek marks a time in the 2000s when extreme, near mindless violence dominated many horror films. When two British tourists, Liz and Kirsty, backpack throughout Australia with their Australian friend Ben, it starts off with a drunken night and a suddenly inoperable car. Enter Mick, the helpful repairman who winds up being their worst nightmare. With near escapes and essentially hunting scenarios, Wolf Creek taps into our general fear of the wilderness, the unknown, and the kindness of strangers.
