“What an unearthly experience, these new scores! The flow! The darkness! The beauty! A dreamy-dream-dream! SUBLIME!” – Guy Maddin
This special program of films was personally selected by Guy Maddin for all-new scores composed and performed by The Flushing Remonstrance, NYC’s premier group devoted to live film accompaniment.
Maddin’s 1988 groundbreaking debut feature, restored in glorious 4K, is a cult classic about blistering lust and seething envy during a 19th-century epidemic ravaging Gimli, a small Icelandic-Canadian fishing village on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. An important landmark in experimental film, inspired by silent and early film techniques, Tales From The Gimli Hospital is a framework for visions, dreams, and hallucinations that shift, swirl, and superimpose upon themselves with the persistent force of repressed memories imperfectly remembered.
Gimli is presented here along with four rare Maddin shorts – Glorious, Lines Of The Hand, Stump The Guesser (all receiving their live score premiere) and Odin’s Shield Maiden – all with live accompaniment.
