Love and Mercy

LOVE & MERCY explores the life, love and genius of Brian Wilson, co-founder of The Beach Boys.

LOVE & MERCY presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and  leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining  catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines  the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon  whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.

Blancanieves

Nitehawk’s LIVE SOUND CINEMA presents the Spanish silent film based on the tale of Snow White, BLANCANIEVES, with a live score by BLACK LODGE!

An evil step-mother, amnesia, and a band of bullfighting dwarfs transform the legendary story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” into Blancanieves; Pablo Berger’s “love letter to European silent cinema.” Set in 1920s southern Spain, this silent black-and white modern film has our Snow White as a young female bullfighter fleeing her past and embarking on an adventure that will lead her towards a destiny unlike any other. Blancanieves was Spain’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for 2012.

Providing the live score to Blancanieves is Black Lodge, a collective of musicians led by guitarist/composer Geoff Gersh, who re-score films then perform live to them.

Uhf Film Feast

Don’t change the channel, don’t touch that dial, Nitehawk is teaming up with Governors Ball for a special Film Feast presentation of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s UHF.

George Newman (Yankovic) is a man of vision. He can’t hold down a job to save his life, but, still, he’s a man of vision. After daydreaming his way out of a gig flipping burgers, George’s uncle bequeaths the young dreamer the reins of the struggling UHF station, Channel 62. Dead last in the ratings and desperate for programming, George starts letting every flight of fancy and weirdo onto the airwaves, everything from “Conan the Librarian” to “Stanley Spadowski’s Clubhouse,” a kids’ show hosted by a borderline nutcase (Michael Richards) who shoots children in the face with a firehouse (Don’t worry, they love it). Naturally, Channel 62 becomes a ratings sensation — which doesn’t sit well with the corporate grease-balls over at Channel 8 who sic the FCC on George and his merry band.

Red Dawn

At the dawn of World War III, a group of teenagers called “The Wolverines” defend their town and country against the Soviets RED DAWN.

Right before the end of the Cold War, John Milius’ Red Dawn taps into the 1980s fear of the possibility of Soviet troops invading small town American. Of course, in good ol’ movie making magic, we see a true American ideal vision as a group of teenagers team together to fight against the common enemy. Through surviving only with hunting rifles, pistols, and bow-and-arrows in the winter and eluding the KGB who hunts them, these “Wolverines” wage a seriously group up guerilla warfare to save themselves, their town, and their country.

Dune

Nitehawk’s BOOZE & BOOKS presents a special screening of DUNE celebrating FOLIO SOCIETY’S much-anticipated edition of Frank Herbert’s classic science-fiction novel illustrated by US artist SAM WEBER.

Sam Weber will introduce the screening and there will be in an after-party with an inspired cocktail in Nitehawk’s Lo-Res bar!

David Lynch brought Frank Herbert’s wildly popular science-fiction novel Dune to the big screen in 1984 and it’s been a trip-tastic go-to-movie ever since. Set in the year 10,191 when the universe is dependent on a spice called Melange that can extend life and can fold time, a Duke’s son (Kyle MacLachlan) leads the enslaved desert warriors on the spice-producing planet Arrakis in an epic battle with the evil Emperor. In the tradition of futuristic space worlds like Star Wars and The Matrix, Dune is about a young man deemed the messiah rising up and trying to make things better for the people. Time, space, telepathy, monsters, madness, love, and righteousness – long live the fighters!

Folio Society’s Dune also features an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Michael Dirda and an afterward by Brian Herbert. Visit Folio Society for more information and to purchase the book!

Sam Weber was born in Alaska, and grew up in Deep River, Ontario, Canada. After attending the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Sam moved to New York to pursue illustration and attend graduate school at The School of Visual Arts. His previous work for The Folio Society includes The Lord of the Flies (2009) and Fahrenheit 451 (2011). His illustrations for Dune were painted in oil on board, with the black-and-white chapter headings in ink and charcoal on paper.

Founded in London in 1947, The Folio Society publishes carefully crafted editions of the world’s finest literature. They believe that great books deserve to be presented in a form worthy of their contents. For nearly 70 years they have celebrated the unique joy to be derived from owning, holding and reading a beautiful printed edition.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Look what happens when you don’t follow the rules…they’re back in GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH!

Billy and Kate may have their first big jobs in New York but that doesn’t mean cute little Gizmo won’t stop causing them problems! After being rounded up to be a part of their company’s animal experiments (headed by Sir Christopher Lee) our little Mogwai gets exposed to some water and, you can guess what happens next, he unleashes the Gremlins! Funny and referential, director Joe Dante shows us what happens when Gremlins go corporate and nearly take over Manhattan.

Ghoulies

Beware of the GHOULIES, they’ll get you in the end. Presented in 35mm!

Why is it every time a group of teenagers have a party in a secluded mansion, one of them has to go and perform some sort of spooky demonic ritual? Does that ever end well? It certainly doesn’t in VHS horror shelf staple Ghoulies, where a group of teenaged party-goers (including a baby faced Mariska Hargitay) unwittingly invite a group of tiny, razor toothed ghouls into their merry band. The pint-sized beasties prove to be poor party guests, chomping at the bit to ruin the kids’ good time (and also kill them). Worst yet, the lil’ terrors aren’t the kids’ only problem: there’s also an undead wizard who can shoot lightning out of his eyes.

Crimes and Misdemeanors

Woody Allen’s classic comic thriller on life’s CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS. A 35mm presentation.

Judah Rosenthal and Cliff Stern have problems.

Judah’s a respected doctor with a great deal of dirty laundry. His mistress has grown impatient with promises to leave his wife, and threatens to go public with their affair, a revelation that would unravel the good doctor’s professional and social standing. Judah struggles with what to do; does he face the consequences of his actions, or does this desperate situation allow for a more permanent – and unspeakable – solution? Who’s to say what’s unspeakable, anyway?

Cliff’s a documentary filmmaker whose rocky marriage and dodgy finances force him to take on a puff-piece project about his blowhard brother-in-law. While filming, Cliff falls in love with a production assistant and he agonizes over his infatuation with her, while also struggling to glamorize his oafish brother-in-law.

Part of Nitehawk’s January THE PERFECT CRIME brunch series.

The Two Faces of January

A thriller centered on a con artist, his wife, and a stranger who flee Athens after one of them is caught up in the death of a private detective.

Screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove, Drive) makes a stylish directing debut with this sleek thriller set in Greece and Istanbul, 1962, and adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel. Intrigue begins at the Parthenon when wealthy American tourists Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his young wife Collete (Kirsten Dunst) meet American expat Rydal (Oscar Isaac), a scammer working as a tour guide. Instead of becoming his latest marks, the two befriend him, but a murder at the couple’s hotel puts all three on the run together and creates a precarious bond between them as the trio’s allegiance is put to the test.

Christmas Vacation Film Feast

Nitehawk Cinema and Ballast Point Present…
FILM FEAST: CHRISTMAS VACATION

Watch in the Griswolds tackle the holidays during their CHRISTMAS VACATION! Second date added: Tuesday, December 9 at 7:15pm!

‘Tis the season with Nitehawk Cinema and Ballast Point’s Film Feast presentation of the holiday classic Christmas Vacation. The perpetual optimist, our dear Clark (don’t you just love the young Chevy Chase?) tries to make the holidays a special family event by chopping down the biggest tree in the forest, hanging a million Christmas lights, and dealing with his obnoxious visiting family members. He does this all while banking on his holiday bonus – but will it come? This third installment of the National Lampoon Vacation film series was written by the beloved John Hughes (just like another popular holiday flick, Home Alone).
