THE ASTROLOGER

Fri, Jul 20
  • Midnight Sold Out

Midnite weekend screenings happen on Friday & Saturday nights (meaning arrive on Friday and/or Saturday night by 11:45pm for seating, the movie starts after midnite)!

Multimedia introduction by Mike Vanderbilt (Daily Grindhouse, The AV Club, Consequence of Sound)

Director: Craig Denney Run Time: 96 min. Format: DCP Release Year: 1976

Starring: Craig Denney, Darrien Earle, Arthyr Chadbourne

In the tradition of The Holy Mountain, Pink Flamingos and The Room comes a slice of batsh*t cinema that must be viewed at midnight. This rarely screened cult oddity is a fascinating passion project (the sole film from director/star Craig Denny) that combines carny mysticism, international high adventure and a Christ allegory for good measure. After Craig Denny (in his egomaniacal glory) failed to secure rights to The Moody Blues tunes heard throughout the film, THE ASTROLOGER never received an official release.

In an era where the trashiest, weirdest films are getting 4k scans from Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome and Shout! Factory, THE ASTROLOGER remains a quaint reminder of tape-trading days and the golden age of cult films. Here is a movie that will most likely NEVER receive an official Blu-Ray or DVD. Not only do you need to see this on the big screen with a wild midnite audience… you have to.

This may be your only chance to see THE ASTROLOGER in 2018.

More than a movie, it’s an experience – and Nitehawk’s midnite screenings will include a multimedia introduction by Chicago film boss Mike Vanderbilt (Daily Grindhouse, The AV Club, Consequence of Sound) and limited-edition collector’s pins for the first 50 attendees.

Sponsored by Daily Grindhouse, Kevin Geeks Out and The Wrong Reel podcast.

“If you think you’ve seen everything…you need to see THE ASTROLOGER.
-Katie Rife, The AV Club

“How many times have you heard, ‘You’ve never seen a movie like this one?’ Well, in this case, it’s head-spinningly, jaw-droppingly true.”
-Michael Gingold, Fangoria and Rue Morgue

“It’s as if Tommy Wiseau made his Citizen Kane, but the result was closer to Beyond the Valley of the Dolls meets The Jerk, with liberal doses of adventure, mysticism and middle-aged sexploitation. Truly a work of anti-genius.”
-Kevin Rice, producer/director and co-host of TV’s Ghoul A Go-Go

“There comes a time when a man must make a movie about astrology, and Kenyan prisons, and astrology, and fighting cobras, and Uranus exploding, and an astral window, and astrology, and watching the actual movie you’re already watching within the movie, and jewel-hunting, and getting drunk by the pool, and astrology, and THIS IS THAT MOVIE but it is not just a movie, it also promises a new way of living, a way of living powered by astrology. Miss it at your peril.”
-Grady Hendricks, author of Paperbacks From Hell
