After a deadly earthquake destroys his home in Peruvian rainforest, a young bear (Ben Whishaw) makes his way to England in search of a new home. The bear, dubbed “Paddington” for the london train station, finds shelter with the family of Henry (Hugh Bonneville) and Mary Brown (Sally Hawkins). Although Paddington’s amazement at urban living soon endears him to the Browns, someone else has her eye on him: Taxidermist Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) has designs on the rare bear and his hide.

No, it’s not the skull cracking, baseball bat wielding Bear Jew, it’s not Stepan Petrenko the deadeye sharpshooting Russian, this man is those two combined and then some, It’s the Nazi-crushing, Panzer-eating Dick Dynamite.

Out of Time: The Material Issue Story examines the tragic story of a rock band on the cusp of superstardom cut short by front man Jim Ellison’s suicide. The film tells the story of Material Issue, a power pop trio from Chicago that was literally out of time, sandwiched between the post-punk era of the 80’s and the alternative rock movement of the 90’s searching for its identity in the gritty world of rock and roll.

The film features original band members Mike Zelenko and Ted Ansani with the first interviews of the family of Jim Ellison since his passing along with others that helped shape the world of the band including Jeff Murphy, Joe Shanahan, Jay O’Rourke, Jeff Kwatinetz, Matt Pinfield, Steve Albini and more.

“The life you think you had? It never happened!”

Released in 2005 but set in the not-so-distant-future, The Island depicts a world where a worldwide pandemic (!) has forced the last of humankind to hunker down in a sanctuary bubble where HD cameras and armed overseers supervise every last move of the inhabitants, including Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan MacGregor.) Forbidden to fraternize across genders, these worker drones’ lives consist of menial labor and colorless food; what keeps them going is the chance of being chosen to relocate to Earth’s last contagion-free zone, a whispered-about tropical paradise known only as The Island.

After Lincoln finds out he and his fellow serfs are actually clones used to supply replacement organs for the elites of the outside world, he mounts a daring escape alongside the beautiful Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson). In an era that valorizes filmmakers who take “big swings,” it’s fascinating that The Island – Michael Bay’s only genuine flop, and the highest-concept film of his pre-Transformers period – still can’t get any respect. The Book of Genesis, THX 1138, Logan’s Run, Soylent Green, Fahrenheit 451, The Beach, Survivor, the music video for “Stitches” by Orgy: it’s all deliriously mashed up (or, if you like, harvested for parts) here in the auteur’s signature swirl of blinding, maximalist, steroidal chaos. – Steve Macfarlane

NoBudge Presents is a new series of feature films made by young and emerging filmmakers with limited budgets and distinct visions. For our third screening, we’re happy to present Actual People, the debut film of writer/director/actor, Kit Zauhar — one of our favorite micro-budget features from the last couple of years. Screening beforehand is Semen Retention for a Better Tomorrow, a striking stop-motion animated short from Alexandra Neuman. Both filmmakers will be present.

Actual People: In her final week of college, a young woman goes to great lengths to win the affections of a boy from Philadelphia and ends up confronting escalating anxieties about her love life, family and future. Kallia and Ram have just begun their first vacation as a couple, and they’re already bickering. Though a mysterious new illness is on the brink of exploding into a pandemic, and despite Ram’s protestations, Kallia insists that they are going to have a fun week in New York City. Within hours of their arrival, a nation-wide lockdown is announced, ruining their plans. Over the course of their stay, they descend into a toxic pattern of jealousy and codependency. Is their childish behavior simply the result of cabin fever, or is it something more?
