The night started off ideally enough for Eden (Markella Kavenagh) and three of her closest friends, full of hard drinks, even harder drugs, loud music and a sweaty dancefloor. One of her pals suggests they score some more narcotics from Ray (Nikolai Nikolaeff), the wild son of an infamous Russian mobster, and when they show up at Ray’s swanky apartment, their host is coked out of his mind and ready to snap. And when he does, Eden and her friends find themselves trapped in a lion’s den of violence, bloodshed and death. Echoing the similar one-location mayhem of Jeremy Saulnier’s GREEN ROOM, director Nick Kozakis’s showstopper KICK ON impressively ups that modern-day masterwork’s ante with more white-knuckle insanity, gnarlier gore and inventive kills, delivering a breathless adrenaline rush whose brutality will make you cringe whenever you’re not cheering with sadistic glee. —Matt Barone
