Trina (Wiktoria Kruszczyńska) has had enough of her domineering mother, so as her 18th birthday approaches, she’s planning to leave home and never come back. That is, until her aunt and paralyzed grandmother suddenly show up, halting her planned exodus and bringing with them a heap of family baggage and unleashing long-hidden family secrets steeped in terrifying folklore and turning Trina’s already-difficult life into a legitimate hellscape. Powerfully oppressive in its dread and dark as hell in its look at familial dysfunction, writer-director Marta Giec’s feature debut is can’t-miss material for fans of bleak and creepy horror, the kinds of films that engulf you while watching and linger on mentally long after the credits roll. —Matt Barone
