In 2018, after 40 years of fighting against oppression, homelessness, and corporate greed in the U.S. and in his native Canada, D.O.A. frontman, activist and cultural politician Joey “Shithead” Keithley decided to turn art into life and run against the outspoken Mayor of Burnaby (population: 250,000+), Derek Corrigan.
Against all odds—and with only a $7000 campaign budget—Keithley won a city councilor seat in Burnaby, BC that year and helped to unseat the entrenched five-term Corrigan who once famously said, “I would never bend over to give a homeless person a dime because he might steal my watch.”
Will Keithley’s message and DIY approach to campaigning resonate with voters in the upcoming Burnaby election of 2022? Win or lose, we will document him every step of the way as he campaigns for a second term.
Warning: Images are not from the movies we’re showing. Trust us, you can’t imagine what we’re showing!
There’s only one word for this movie: EPIC. Directed by one of the greatest martial arts directors of all time, starring one of the biggest action stars of all time, and staged on some of the biggest locations ever shot for a Hong Kong movie, this film demands to be seen on the big screen. A swan song for old school kung fu, but also a showcase for a new generation of performers, it’s a movie that hasn’t gotten its due because mostly people see it on cropped VHS or scuzzy old DVDs, so here’s our chance to take this strong shot of butt-kicking liquor straight and on the silver screen, the way it should be seen.
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad
Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, boxing champion Apollo Creed, who died before Adonis was born. However, boxing is in his blood, so he seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and asks the retired champ to be his trainer. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis, and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any in the ring. With Rocky’s help, Adonis soon gets a title shot, but whether he has the true heart of a fighter remains to be seen.
Starring: Kim Milford, Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith, Gianni Russo, Eddie Deezen, Roddy McDowall, Keenan Wynn
The Deuce has been – is always – listening… 15-odd years with ear to the sometimes puddley, sometimes dog-poopy ground… Tuned in to your wants, your needs, your desires, your druthers… and now – near deafened – the tinnitus of too old – but by the cacophonous chorus of celebratory caterwauling: “Finally!!”– you cry out – “At long last… LASERBLAST!!”
Aliens! Amulets!! Sly (as in: blatant) jibes at a more successful space-opera franchise!! And a mom who beguilingly defies the laws of aging!! LASERBLAST is laissez-faire filmmaking that throws ludicrous at the wall and logic out the window and is so nonplussed by paltries such as proofreading as to allow misspellings amongst the cast credits… LASERBLAST has bigger fish to fry!!
Morose “teen” “boy” – miffed over (somehow seemingly younger than him) “mom’s” pending upteenth Acapulco outing – tries to cry his sorry state to sweeter-natured girlfriend (Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith!!) only to be bullied away by her bonkers ex-General grandad (Keenan Wynn!!)… into the further bullying arms of town-baddie (Eddie Deezen!??!)… The rest of said LASERBLAST being so brain-strainingly bizarre and brazenly brainless a succinct synopsis is neither possible nor warranted nor wise to attempt… Not only will the lasers of said LASERBLAST blast everything on screen to smithereens but they will melt your mind to a molten mess as well! While goofy clay-mation aliens taunt you in your taciturnity with such sassy bon mots as “Gleep”…
The booze-embalmed layabouts at the Embassy Theatre, initially befuddled by the buffoonery on display but – according to movie-maven Janet Maslin – eventually warmed to the LASERBLAST levity… and – as the still frozen-to-the-ground ear of The Deuce has deduced: you too will have a blast… at LASERBLAST!!
Starring: Kay Francis, Joel McCrea, Lilyan Tashman, Eugene Pallette, Alan Dinehart
Hosted by Caroline Golum and Cristina Cacioppo. Followed by an afterparty in Trees Lounge with a DJ set of pre-code era tunes from Owen Kline plus our signature cocktail special “Blonde in Hell.”
Depression-era desperation and girlish camaraderie is the order of the day in this early work from seminal screwballer George Cukor!
Pre-code fixture Kay Francis and Lilyan Tashman star as down-and-out dames who eke out a meager living as paid companions for out-of-town businessmen. As escorts Wanda and Marie, the pennywise pair prefer to keep things strictly commercial, but sparks fly when a flippant millionaire (iconic character actor Eugene Pallette) enlists their charm labor for a raucous yacht party. Hijinks, naturally, ensue in this convoluted romcom from America’s Lubitsch (Lubtisch himself not withstanding).
Starring: Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Samantha Mathis, Fisher Stevens, Richard Edson
Night Owl Video is proud to present our next Video Store Gem: Rocky Morton & Annabel Jankel’s Super Mario Bros!
Starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, this whacked out cult classic was the very first screen adaptation of a video game. Instead of a literal adaptation, Morton & Jankel took the bright and colorful Nintendo games and turned it into dystopian nightmare with shades of Blade Runner and Brazil. Dennis Hopper hams it up in a supporting role with his King Koopa, a tyrannical dictator that has more in common with Idi Amin than the bright orange turtle king from the games.
Recalling a time when there were chances being taken on IP and adaptations, Super Mario Bros. is a sight to behold in the cold light of 2026. Join us for this screening, on a glorious 35mm print and with an introduction and pre-screening raffle of original merch by Night Owl Video’s Aaron Hamel. Remember, Trust the Fungus!!
Starring: Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield, Naomi Ackie, Eiza González, Will Poulter, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, Don Cheadle, Demi Moore
