Dealing with a drinking problem that’s ruining her life, Zoey heads back to her childhood home to get her life back in order. The plan starts off roughly thanks to her father’s cold demeanor, but when she discovers a collection of VHS recordings left by her dead mother and meant to be viewed as annual birthday messages, Zoey finds some comfort. The deeper she gets into the videos, though, the more it becomes clear that her parents were hiding something terrible during her childhood, something tied to the occult. Heavy in analog creepiness and with chilling visuals but also fueled by raw emotion, writer-director Josh Tanner’s debut feature is a powerful work of visceral horror. —Matt Barone
