Blind Fury

Mon, Aug 17

Midnite weekend screenings happen on Friday & Saturday nights (meaning arrive on Friday and/or Saturday night by 11:45pm for seating, the movie starts after midnite)!

Mon, Aug 17 @ 9:15 pm: Introduced by producer/artist Adam Howard

Director: Phillip Noyce Run Time: 86 min. Format: 35mm Rating: R Release Year: 1989

Starring: Rutger Hauer, Terry O’Quinn, Brandon Call, Noble Willingham, Lisa Blount, Nick Cassavetes

Released in the sweet spot of that short but memorable period when the late, great Rutger Hauer was a legit leading man in American movies (The Hitcher, Ladyhawke), Blind Fury has earned its place in the pantheon of bizarre cult classics. It’s both an homage to Japanese blind swordsman films, and a road movie with a splash of a stealth Vietnam war film thrown in. The result of this potent mix: B-movie bliss.

Hauer plays Nick Parker, a beleaguered, visually impaired veteran who is unintentionally drawn into a battle with a ruthless crime syndicate and is forced to become a surrogate father to a bratty kid. It’s got fights! It’s got unintentional laughs! And it’s only 86 minutes! Come see New Yorker Radio Hour senior producer, artist, and curator Adam Howard host this butt-kicking gem, which is probably the silliest movie to ever get two thumbs up from Siskel & Ebert.
